This
house, as is typical of older Seattle residences, began life with two small bedrooms
and minimal attic storage-a configuration too cramped for a family due to expand. The
new addition fits with the house and neighborhood while establishing its own character.
We removed the existing roof and left the eaves, then built a second level: three
cozy bedrooms, ample storage, a bath. The new geometry, formed by intersecting
gable roofs, is revealed in the vaulted stairwell and master bedroom, creating
a feeling of openness. Indenting the corners of the house increased daylight and
defined the shape and scale of the exterior and interior. |
