This house
in northern Seattle-an area with many housing styles and types-provided an opportunity
to slip a contemporary house into an established neighborhood.
The
original flat-roofed house was built in the 1940s. A modern-styled sun porch was
added in the 1960s. Both roofs leaked, and the owner desired more space to pursue
his painting.
We
designed a second story-with a shed roof-to give him the art studio, fourth bedroom,
and second bath he was looking for. On the main level, we added an entry and kitchen,
positioning a deck above to visually join the upper and main levels. Siding and
windows were replaced throughout, and a new shed roof was added to the sunporch.
